After six months of growth, the WSU Current Conditions Index dropped 0.4 percent in July. The two Index indicators having the greatest negative impact were seasonally adjusted home sales that declined 44.7 percent from June and the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, which increased 0.7 percentage points from June. Activity at Wichita’s Mid-Continent airport was encouraging, however. Seasonally adjusted outbound passenger traffic increased 3.8 percent and outbound airfreight shipments increased 3.6 percent. With Hawker Beechcraft and Cessna Aircraft announcing more layoffs over the next few weeks, the Current Conditions Index may remain in a downward mode for a while.
