The WSU Current Conditions Index declined 1.4 percent in August, its largest loss since August 2009. The seasonally adjusted hotel occupancy rate decreased 4.1 percentage points, and the seasonally adjusted number of outbound passengers at Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport decreased 9.6 percent from July to August this year. The good news from the other seasonally adjusted indicators was a 2.6 percent increase in home sales, an 11.9 percent increase in the volume of airfreight shipments at Mid-Continent Airport, and a 0.4 percentage point decline in the unemployment rate. The upward trend in the Index that lasted for six months has now taken a two-month reversal. Hopefully, this reversal will be shorter than the 15-month decline experienced in 2008 and 2009.
