The WSU Leading Economic Indicators Index can be used as a short-term predictor of the strength of the Wichita economy. With a four-month decline of 3.9 percent, this downward trend suggests that the area economy is likely to weaken over the next six months. Despite this trend, some aspects of the Wichita economy improved from May to June. The real value of residential and non-residential building permits increased 32.1 and 16.3 percent, respectively. The real value of new orders for aircraft and parts, nationally, increased 18.1 percent and the Aerospace Stock Index increased 4 percent.
